Postpericardiotomy syndrome (PPS) is worsening or new formation of pericardial and/or pleural effusion usually 1 to 6 weeks after cardiac surgery, as a result of autoimmune inflammatory reaction within pleural and pericardial space.
Criteria for Postpericardiotomy syndrome; a diagnosis is made if patients present with 2 out of the following 5 criteria:
- Fever
- Pericardial or pleuritic chest pain
- Pericardial or pleural friction rub
- Pericardial effusion with elevated C-reactive protein (CRP)
- Pleural effusion with elevated C-reactive protein (CRP)
