Additional Info
Acute vs chronic
- This code is for bronchitis or tracheobronchitis that is chronic.
- To code bronchitis or tracheobronchitis that is acute, code Lower respiratory tract infection, acute infectious.
- To code bronchitis or tracheobronchitis for which it is not clear if it is chronic or acute, use Bronchitis, acute or chronic not specified, infectious or noninfectious
COPD context
- A potential source confusion is that this code is different from the "Chronic bronchitis" that is a form of COPD.
- Part of the reason this is confusing is that sometimes clinicians use "Chronic bronchitis" and "COPD" interchangeably if the patient is the so-called "blue bloater" phenotype of COPD.
- So, if your patient just has the chronic bronchitis form of COPD (with or without exacerbation) use COPD, without exacerbation or COPD, acute exacerbation.
- On the other hand, use Bronchitis, chronic, infectious or noninfectious if they have it in the ABSENCE of COPD.
