The Critical Care and Medicine Database is a data collection project for Internal Medicine Wards and Critical Care units within the WRHA.

Purpose and Mission

The database has been used for quality control, administrative support and medical research. Any research involving our data has first to be approved by the steering committee, and by the University of Manitoba Research Ethics Board if appropriate.

Data we collect

We collect data for all Critical Care (ICU) patients in Winnipeg, and for Internal Medicine patients on specific wards at the following hospitals:

  • Health Sciences Center (ICU & MED)
  • St Boniface Hospital (ICU & MED)
  • Victoria General Hospital (ICU & MED)
  • Grace General Hospital (ICU & MED)
  • Concordia Hospital (ICU)
  • Seven Oaks Hospital (ICU)

The following information is collected:

  • Registry information - basic patient demographic data - ICU and Medicine
    • transfer delay - ICU and Medicine
    • Moves - Medicine
  • Admitting Diagnosis - ICU and Medicine
  • Complications - ICU and Medicine
  • APACHE II -ICU
  • Charlson Comorbidity Index-ICU and Medicine
  • MOST- Medicine
  • Labs - ICU and HSC Medicine manually and also by using theDelphic system.
  • Drugs dispensed - ICU
  • Transfusion Audit -ICU
  • TISS - ICU
  • Nursing Task items - Medicine


As of January 2008 we had data for over 100,000 patients.

History

The Critical Care and Medicine Database has been collecting increasing amounts of data from critical care and medicine patients at Winnipeg hospitals since 1988.
