The Critical Care and Medicine Database is a data collection project for Critical Care Units and Internal Medicine Wards within the WRHA.
Purpose and Mission
Mission Statement Medicine and Critical Care Database April 7, 2008
The collection of medical data at the WRHA department of medicine and critical care sites for the purpose of administration, research and quality improvement purposes.
To that end the following services are provided:
- Provide aggregate data for the purpose of monitoring capacity utilization, diagnostics, work load, and outcome trends.
- Prepare standardized monthly reports are to be available within one month of the reporting period and quarterly reports within 6 weeks of the quarter end.
- Coordinate the collection of data and manage the raw data
- Maintain the quality of the date to ensure the most accurate possible representation of a patient’s medical condition, outcomes and hospital stay.
- Ensure patient data is available within two weeks of patient discharge 95% of the time.
- To support administrators and researchers by filling basic data requests within two weeks of the request and within one month for request that require data analysis.
- To use the data collector resources to support special project data collection requests.

The following information is collected:
- Registry information - basic patient demographic data - ICU and Medicine
- Admit, Transfer and Discharge date and time - ICU and Medicine
- ER_Wait - Medicine
- Admitting Diagnosis (Diagnosis Coding)- ICU and Medicine
- Complications ( Diagnosis Coding) - ICU and Medicine
- APACHE II -ICU
- Charlson Comorbidity Index-ICU and Medicine
- MOST- Medicine
- Labs - ICU and HSC Medicine manually and also by using the Delphic system.
- Pharmacy Collection - ICU
- Transfusion Audit -ICU
- TISS - ICU
- Patient Task Tracking Nursing work items - Medicine
Locations where we collect
We collect data for all Critical Care (ICU) patients in Winnipeg, and for Internal Medicine patients on specific wards at the following hospitals:
- Health Sciences Center (ICU & MED)
- St Boniface Hospital (ICU & MED)
- Victoria General Hospital (ICU & MED)
- Grace General Hospital (ICU & MED)
- Concordia Hospital (ICU)
- Seven Oaks Hospital (ICU)
Data Set Size
The Critical Care and Medicine Database has been collecting increasing amounts of data from critical care and medicine patients at Winnipeg hospitals since 1988.
As of September 2008 we had data for over 111,156 patients.

The steering committee members are responsible for the Medicine and Critical Care Database and provide guidance and leadership for it.
- Dan Roberts chairs the steering committee
- Dan Roberts, Jodi Walker-Tweed and Bojan Paunovic are responsible for the approval of projects and data requests and confirming that appropriate ethics approval is obtained when necessary
- Trish Ostryzniuk is responsible for the management and training of the data collectors
- Julie Mojica is responsible for aggregate data reporting and statistical analysis
- Tina Tenbergen is responsible for data compilation, transference and storage and as an advisor on process and quality
- Allan Garland attends as a critical care advisor
