Old Pre-ICD10 poisoning codes.

  • To clarify, intentional means intention to cause harm/suicide as opposed to taking an overdose thinking it will make them feel better? I find the word "intentional" hard to define. I get patients who intentionally take lots of cocaine and alcohol for example but were not suicidal. However, they may have known this would likely cause harm. In reality most patients take overdoses to get attention, and not as a serious attempt at suicide. Does anyone have an idea how to define "intentional"?
  • Accidental overdose is whatever is not intentional. --LKolesar 12:08, 2015 June 3 (CDT)
    • I code it is an overdose taken with the intent to end their life, otherwise I code as accidental/misadventure, thoughts? Lisa Kaita 12:22, 2015 June 3 (CDT)
    • I agree-sometimes it's hard to differentiate! I would agree that I would only code it as intentional if there was intent for the person to harm themselves or commit suicide.~~
