Additional Info
- This code is "NOS" in by virtue of being an ischemic stroke that is not embolic.
- Thus, if the ischemic stroke is embolic (including cardioembolic) then instead of this code, use Cerebral infarction/stroke due to embolism.
- Don't confuse it with Stroke, NOS which refers to a stroke for which is not specified as hemorrhage or infarction.
- If this code occurs, and then the initially ischemic stroke spontaneously "transforms" and bleeds, then COMBINE this code with the appropriate code for the hemorrhage (see below)
- However, if hemorrhage after an ischemic stroke was NOT spontaneous, but followed anticoagulation, then the hemorrhage should be coded as Hemorrhage, due to anticoagulant drugs since it's not a spontaneous hemorrhagic transformation, and thus is a complication of treatment, not a complication of the stroke per se.
Alternate ICD10s to consider coding instead or in addition
Candidate Combined ICD10 codes
- Hemorrhage, subarachnoid or ruptured cerebral aneurysm
- Hemorrhage, intracerebral/intracranial, nontraumatic (ICH, hemorrhagic stroke)
- Subdural or epidural hematoma/hemorrhage, nontraumatic
