Cognos is the reporting system used to report from the EPR (among other things). We are pursuing two things:

  • short term: get a specific report from Cognos to facilitate data entry (see Cognos EPR Report)
    • This is not a new report system that collector will be using. Tina will obtain this data stream and pull it into collector user tool which is very much the same as the EPR Reports Integrator but name will change Cognos Report Integrator. Staff must start learning to work with the EPR report integrator.--Trish Ostryzniuk 15:53, 2020 May 7 (CDT)
  • long term: get Julie access to Cognos to do some reporting directly, which will enable us to provide more information without having to manually re-code all data (see #Direct Access to Cognos).

Direct Access to Cognos

  • Cognos licenses:
    • full report generator licenses are ~1500$ for acquisition and then ~20% annually; discussion in main office is that we would best have two, one for Julie for analysis and one for Tina/operations to get data out for collectors. We could probably cope with one, but not ideal.
    • there are "lesser" licenses to only consume data that would cost less but have less functionality
    • we might be able to inherit a license from someone else in the organization who isn't using it any more.
  • Training and orientation
    • Phil Jarman's group handles much of the orientation about the data mart's content and how to report on it; they don't really run training, more of a resource as asked
    • LMS training is available and we might want to get started on it
  • Generating output:
  • Cognos is not really a data extraction tool, meant more as a reporting tool; depending on they type of output we need we could generate undue load on the server. It's impossible to know until we analyze further. If this ends up being the problem, there are other ways to get the data out.
  • one can schedule automated output from Cognos, but it might only be possible to do so into an email, which we would then still need to process automatically
    • they run scheduled ETLs over night, so we would not be able to schedule ours between 8pm-8am (or at least definitely not after midnight)
  • Mike will:
    • send us their data dictionary
    • set up incident to get us a quote for the Cognos license
    • contact the head of Acute Care to allow us access to the data
    • if there are no curve balls we might be able to get this going within a few weeks
  • Next steps:
    • we need to discuss money for licenses
    • if we get the output, Tina will need to process it for import into CCMDB, ideally automatic

Log

  • 2020-04-03 - For now it seems they want to provide us only with Cognos EPR Report; if we want more, someone will need to follow up with them.
  • 2019-12-12 - INC 3845870 - Alex Omsen is booking time with Mike Ocko to discuss next steps
