We collect data about decubitus ulcers (pressure ulcers, pressure injuries, pressure sores, bed sores) because they are iatrogenic hospital-acquired complications associated with preventable harm, poor patient outcomes, and are key indicators of quality and safety in clinical care. This data can be analyzed in the context of our broader data collection, see Data User Portal for the Manitoba Critical Care and Medicine Databases.

We collect Comorbid Diagnosis, Admit Diagnosis and Acquired Diagnosis / Complication as the following ICD10 Diagnoses; see the links for definitions:

Decubitus ulcer codes:

Prior to a Change to coding locations for Decubitus Ulcers on 2025-07-01 we coded the stages but not the locations. This is also when we started coding Decubitus Deep Tissue Damage. We report on decubitus ulcers as part of the indicator ICU Acquired Ulcer Rate, which is listed in Critical Care Program Quality Indicator Report and the WRHA ICU Hospital-Acquired Conditions report.

Our collection of data for the ICU Acquired Ulcer Rate indicator led to the 2024 investigation of 2022 rise in the number of decubitus ulcers after outliers in this indicator were identified.

The Decubitus Ulcer Study is an example of how our data has supported a change initiative around decubitus ulcers, when we supported collection on the influence of special care on ulcers in the internal medicine ward setting.

Regarding data quality, while we don't have ongoing checks specific to pressure injuries, controls around this data are included in our overall Data Integrity Checks which apply to broader diagnosis collection and general data quality.
