According to the gospel of CCI Collection#Related Imaging, Diagnostic and Therapeutic procedures performed at the same time, all diagnostic and therapeutic actions completed during the scope will be coded.
- There are generally four CCI Collections that can occur in a GI Scope:
- Inspection, Exploration (endoscopic)
- Biopsy (endoscopic)
- Excision, Resection (for polyp removal)
- Control of Bleeding (for treating actively bleeding vessels)
Combine one of the above codes with the deepest area that was reached:
- the deepest that was reached of the following
Exceptions:
- If a repair of a vessel that is not currently bleeding use Occlusion + the occluded vessel
- For an upper esophageal vessel, code Occlusion + (T) Other Vessels of Head, Neck, Spine, NOS
- For a lower esophageal vessel, code Occlusion + (T) Thoracic Vessels, NOS
- For all other GI tract vessel repairs, use Occlusion + (T) Blood Vessels, NOS
