A fistula is an abnormal connection between one hollow structure (which may be an organ such as bladder, stomach, or a blood vessel OR a "space" such as the peritoneal space or the thoracic cavity), to another hollow structure OR to the external surface (i.e. skin).
We have specific codes for some, but not all fistulas:

* In general, enter the codes for both structures involved as [[Combined ICD10 codes]] -- e.g. for a fistula between the bladder and intestine ("enterovesicular fistula"), combine  [[Intestinal fistula]] and [[Bladder, fistula, to anywhere]]
* When the fistula goes from a hollow structure '''to the skin (external)''' then only code the hollow structure itself --- e.g. an anal fistula to the skin just code: [[Anus or rectum, fistula]]
* For a fistula involving a hollow structure for which '''we do not have a specific fistula code''', then use the appropriate NOS code -- e.g. for a fistula involving the gallbladder, use [[Gallbladder or bile duct disorder, NOS]]

A fistula is an abnormal connection between one hollow structure (which may be an organ such as bladder, stomach, or a blood vessel OR a "space" such as the peritoneal space or the thoracic cavity), to another hollow structure OR to the external surface (i.e. skin).
