*A fistula is an abnormal connection between one hollow structure (which may be an organ such as bladder, stomach, or a blood vessel OR a "space" such as the peritoneal space or the thoracic cavity), or the external surface (i.e. skin).
*We have specific codes for some, but not all fistulas:

**[[Fistula involving stomach or duodenum]]
**[[Anus or rectum, fistula]]
**[[Intestinal fistula]]
**[[Bladder, fistula, to anywhere]]
**[[Female genital tract, fistula (to anywhere)]]
*For a fistula involving a hollow structure for which we do not have a specific fistula code, then use the appropriate NOS code -- e.g. for a fistula involving the gallbladder, use [[Gallbladder or bile duct disorder, NOS]]
*RULE FOR CODING FISTULA:
**In general, combine the codes for both structures involved -- e.g. for a fistula between the bladder and intestine ("enterovesicular fistula"), combine  [[Intestinal fistula]] and [[Bladder, fistula, to anywhere]]
**When the fistula goes from a hollow structure to the skin (external) then only code the hollow structure itself --- e.g. an anal fistula to the skin just code: [[Anus or rectum, fistula]]

Coding Fistulas in ICD10

A fistula is an abnormal connection between one hollow structure (which may be an organ such as bladder, stomach, or a blood vessel OR a "space" such as the peritoneal space or the thoracic cavity), to another hollow structure OR to the external surface (i.e. skin). We have specific codes for some, but not all fistulas:
