Procedure: Transfusion of FFP
CCI Picklist code: 1.LZ.19.HH-U2-J
CCI Collection Mode: CCI collect count units

This procedure is a part of CCI Collection via CCI Picklist.

Additional Info

  • Per Canadian Blood services -- 1 unit of FFP is 250 mL. These DO come with a sticker, but if the unit is divided (e.g. into a half unit) then the sticker no longer is used.
    • So to count the # of units of FFP add together the following:
      • (a) the # of stickers from FFP +
      • (b) for FFP without stickers, divide the volume given by 250 and rounded UP to the next integer
        • e.g. 300 mL --> 1.2 x 250 --> round up to 2 units
        • e.g. 50 mL --> 0.2 x 250 --> round up to 1 unit

Transfusion Guidelines

  • Use transfusion codes once for each separate day that a transfusion happens.
  • For each such day, also code the number of units transfused as the Px Count
  • Definition of a single unit:
    • A single unit is what the blood bank (Canadian Blood Services) says it is. A single unit is accompanied by a single, unique sticker that is put by nursing on the Blood Products Administration Record in hospital charts.
    • So, the number of units you record should equal the number of stickers on the record.
