The diagnosis is categorized as "Cardio-Vasc OR" due to limitations when we first implemented it. We never had a category for plastics or similar. Will leave it there for now, since the move to ICD10 will take care of this.
This diagnosis code is for the debridement of cardiovascular wounds only. For other types of debridement, see :Category:Debridement.

* in other words: How to Skin grafting/Debridement and Wound Debridement relate in collection? Ttenbergen 11:34, 2012 November 26 (EST)
** Both are done by Plastics. Skin grafting is done in the OR whereas debridement can be done in the OR or at the bedside.--CMarks 15:17, 2012 November 27 (EST)
***so would the debridement in Skin grafting/Debridement be used only for skin grafting debridement, then?Ttenbergen 22:02, 2012 November 28 (EST)
**** Ususally but not always, a patient can have large deep areas with decubitus ulcers or fascitis that require extensive debridement but not always get skin graft.--FLindell 08:59, 2012 November 30 (EST)
***** So would you use 763.29 wound debridement, or 83700 - Skin grafting/Debridement? My point here is that I am not sure how they are different. Ttenbergen 13:09, 2012 December 3 (EST)
**Skin grafting adds to the wound whereas debridement removes from the wound. They are completely different procedures.--CMarks 13:31, 2012 December 4 (EST)
*** Yes, I understand that grafting and debriding are different, pretty much opposite. What I was wondering is, is 837.00 for drbridement related to grafts only, then? And, does it mean that 763.29 should not be used for debridements related to grafts? Ttenbergen 11:18, 2012 December 5 (EST)
**** in order to clarify, could 837 (skin grafting/debridement) just have the word debridement removed from title?  All debridement procedures would then be under cardio vascular OR and 837 be exclusive to skin grafting.Jkublick Dec. 12,2012
**** That would be one way to handle it. I think it would depend how we use this data - how does Julie report on it? Ttenbergen 23:32, 2012 December 12 (EST)
****the purpose of this code in first place had to do with burn patients in that wounds due to burns are aways debrided so that skin grafting can be done.  The code was for either or because generally both are done for burns in ICU therefore it was lumped into one code.  I like Judy's suggestion that 83700 should be strictly skin grafting and 763-23 is for wound debridement.  How have staff been using this code (837) related to burns only or for other type wounds too?  This would help determine if we can split it cleanly or not.

*I use this category to cover abdominal surgery patients that return to the OR for debridement, (often called 2nd look) since they are usually removing dead tissue that the patient was too unstable to have addressed in the earlier OR. I also use it for burns or plastics procedures.--Jpeterson 09:26, 2013 August 26 (CDT)
