ESRD vs Acute renal failure
Never code both (Chronic kidney disease (end-stage kidney disease, ESRD), Stage 5) and either of the acute renal failure diagnoses together:
- Kidney, acute tubular necrosis (ATN)
- Kidney, acute renal failure NOS
- Kidney, renal failure/insufficiency/uremia, unspecified as acute or chronic
- Kidney, acute renal failure, postprocedural

Could we not use the Acute Renal Failure code for a patient who is categorized as stage 5, but has not yet started dialysis in the community? We will occasionally admit "non-dialysis" stage 5 patients who are admitted with fluid overload and require emergent initiation of dialysis. |
