Serial numbers and study numbers are used as unique patient identifiers.

The serial number is a number assigned manually from a consecutive sequence managed by each individual unit.

This means the serial number is unique at the unit level, but not across our data.

A study number that is unique across the entire dataset is therefore generated when the data is appended.
