Chronic Renal Failure is coded as a comorbid condition only for any patient who is receiving chronic outpatient dialysis for kidney failure prior to the current hospital admission.
{{DX tag | Renal | Medical Problem| CRF - Chronic Renal Failure | None

*For newly dialyzed patients use the ARF - Acute Renal Failure codes instead.
* A patient who has been receiving outpatient dialysis treatments recently prior to hospitalization is considered to be in CRF.
* A patient who is not currently in a dialysis treatment program should not be considered to be in CRF.
* A patient with an intact kidney transplant who is not being dialyzed should not be coded as CRF

CRF and TISS
See Renal Coding Considerations (old) and ICD10 Guideline for Renal Coding because there are a number of coding rules related to renal diagnoses.
* recent audit:
FINDINGS
*CRF (351) in DX but TISS not marked when LOS 4 days or more
*CRF (351) is being coded in comorbid instead of Renal insufficiency (364-87 or 88).

*See the data integrity check related to this code at "CRF vs ARF, ARI, Renal Transplant".

*if LOS in ICU or medicine <=3 days and IF comorbid DX is 351, then TISS 52-55 or Medicine TASK item not marked is correct.
(most CRF patient will have dialysis 2-3 times per week, so checking every patient with LOS of <= days who have 351 in comorbid, but nothing on TISS or in TASK, if creating excessive chart checks.
* if Julie would like to comment further.
