  • This code includes an ischemic cardioembolic event.
  • If this code occurs, and then the initially ischemic stroke spontaneously "transforms" and bleeds, then COMBINE this code with the appropriate code for the hemorrhage (see below).
    • However, if hemorrhage after an ischemic stroke was NOT spontaneous, but followed anticoagulation, then the hemorrhage should be coded as Hemorrhage, due to anticoagulant drugs since it's not a spontaneous hemorrhagic transformation, and thus is a complication of treatment, not a complication of the stroke per se.
