Acquired diagnoses do not refer to diagnoses that have been discovered after the patient comes to the unit if it is likely that the patient was admitted to ward with the problem in the first place but it took a few days to figure that out.
Acquired diagnoses do not refer to diagnoses that have been discovered after the patient comes to the unit if it is likely that the patient was admitted to ward with the problem in the first place but it took a few days to figure that out.
We don't repeat the diagnosis in the acquired section. For example if the admit diagnosis is CHF they get treated but relapse back into CHF we do not add that as a acquired complication.
Exceptions:
* For procedures we can repeat them once as a complication. For example if the patient came in with a scope in the admit and then had 3 more scopes in the hospital you would enter it once as an acquired
* the same type of infection that was present on admission but with a different pathogen.

* If patient does come in with CHF and later goes into respiratory failure 2nd to flash pulmonary edema, I have repeated the CHF in acquired in the past. But CHF is not on Dan's list of significant complications. Does this mean do not list it in acquired any more?--FLindell 15:59, 18 July 2011 (CDT)
** I talked with Trish today. You don't need to repeat a diagnosis that was present on admission if it reoccurs during the hospital stay.Of course the exception would be the same type of infection that was present on admission but with a different pathogen.GHall 21:59, 18 July 2011 (CDT)

discussion
both terms are used to refer to problems, procedures, surgery that occur "AFTER" the patient is admitted to a unit.
right now different terms are used in different places. EG CCMDB uses acquired, this article is acquired, I don't know what TMSX uses, but the category name is "complications". Can we settle on one? I am volunteering to clean this up on the wiki if we settle on one. Ttenbergen 16:58, 2 November 2010 (CDT)
