Rules for Coding Falls in ICD10

  • Only code in-hospital falls IF THEY CAUSE AN INJURY, and in that case code the PRIMARY code is the injury

, with the associated mechanism of injury being Mechanism of injury: fall or jump (not necessarily from a height) With the exception from Observation after accident/injury if it is used to code the observational care itself, not the suspected injury. So, in regard to a fall in hospital without an injury, use this code only if there was actual additional medical observation that resulted from the fall, e.g. an extra day in hospital.

Alternate ICD10s to consider coding instead or in addition
