Pain control - Post op should be coded when...

	Pain - This code and Pain Control - non post op doesn't seem to have a real equivalent in ICD10. Collectors are using Pain, acute NOS as an equivalent, but it is really a different thing. The old one is more of a procedure than a dx. How should that be coded now? Especially in patients where that might be the only reason they are admitted. AG REPLY --- first of all, postoperative pain is a NORMAL part of the surgical process, so in general it is not necessary to code it separately -- UNLESS it is somehow extraordinary and extraordinary means are needed to deal with it, or it prolongs the hospitalization. Even use of PCA pumps is not unusual after some operations, so those things, by themselves, do not need specific coding, again, unless it meets one of the two criteria above. And when one of those IS the case, use Pain, acute NOS for this type of pain. Second -- for what used to be called non-postop pain, you're right, there is no such code in ICD10 and there doesn't need to be. ICD10 does have a number of pain codes: Pain, back NOS (back pain) Pain associated with female genital organs and/or menstrual cycle Pain, throat Pain, pleuritic chest pain Pain, chest NOS Pain, abdominal or pelvic Dysuria (pain with urination) Pain, acute NOS Pain, chronic NOS I added Category:Pain and put these dxs into there.
