The left/right atrial appendage is a pouch-like sac in the muscle wall of the atrium; it fills & empties with blood as the atrium does. In atrial fib or mitral valve disease it is prone to developing thrombus, so it is often ligated during a cardiac procedure prophylactically. CCI coding
