RE:136-90 Template:Discussion

  • what have collectors been doing in past for shock due to dehyration? This category was only meant to be for hypovolemia due to bleeding for different reasons as listed. 139-90 other, is other bleeding causing hypovolemia. I have asked Dr. Garland for further opinion on this. I am not sure the task group really wants to "mix" shock due to dehydration from not drinking or burns with shock due to hyovolemia from bleeds.Trish Ostryzniuk 16:39, 2012 October 19 (CDT)
    • at the meeting we also talked about dehydration from burns. If we don't code it here, then how should it be coded? I think that was what brought the question forward in the first place... Ttenbergen 17:23, 2012 October 19 (CDT)
  • This code is used inconsistently by collectors. What do you want us to use for severely dehydrated patients who are in severe shock? Hypotension NYD?? or what?? If this category is only for bleeding then we need to clearly state thatGHall 07:22, 2012 October 22 (CDT)
  • Hypovolemic shock should be for any reason and the subcode could indicate "other" if not on the list. This is my opinion. When it is a bleed then there is usually another code to indicate this anyway. I think it should not have the words "hemorrhagic shock" as part of the title as this is misleading and most collectors will only collect bleeding-related hypovolemic shock. I am sure we have missed the hypovolemic shocks that are for other reasons because of that title. --LKolesar 11:46, 2012 October 22 (CDT)
      • I know I have been using this code when a pt is severely dehydrated and has signs and symptoms of hypovolemic shock so I code other 136-90
      • Hi over at HSC GH4/H4H we see the pts with severe GI Losses, 5-7 litres +, come in, clearly in shock, how would we capture this Hypotension NYD? And as listed on Wiki other causes of shock can be Pulmonary embolus, Liver failure, Pancreatitis, Drug overdoses, and Burns, which can result in Shock. How do you want this captured, Hypotension NYD?

If you want Hyptovolemic/Hemorrhagic Shock only to be due to bleeding please let us know, I will change my practice.--PStein 09:21, 2012 October 23 (CDT)

      • I agree with Laura's comment as the "hemmorhagic" addition being dissuasive.

Hypovolemic shock-Other would cover most of the shocks not associated with blood loss- or those otherwise listed.--Llemoine 07:48, 2012 October 24 (CDT)
