This diagnosis code is for the debridement of cardiovascular wounds only. For other types of debridement, see :Category:Debridement.
How do dxs Skin grafting/Debridement and Wound Debridement relate?
Option 1:
*If the debridement is related to skin grafting, code as Skin grafting/Debridement. For all other debridement, code as Wound Debridement.

Option 2:
* For any debridement, including those related to skin grafts, code as Wound Debridement. If there is a skin graft as well, code as Skin grafting/Debridement in addition to Wound Debridement code. ( we would need to change the name of that diagnosis to exclude the word debridement).

Have you coded as option 1 or option 2 in the past?
* I have not had an occasion to use this yet--Dawna Marie Bieniarz 09:40, 2014 September 9 (CDT)
* I have used the category under Cardiovascular OR- wound debridement.--Lpruden2 09:53, 2014 September 9 (CDT)
* I do not recall offhand an occasion that I used these codes. Pamela Piche 15:46, 2014 September 9 (CDT)

* There are actually 4 debridement codes (I have put them into :Category:Debridement)
* (this article) under Cardiovascular OR there is wound debridement which I interpret as only for CV surgery- related debridements; The wound debridement code under Cardiovascular OR's should be clarified as I see many use it as a general code for any debridement anywhere.  Perhaps we should discuss the rationale for this code being put in the CV OR section if it is intended to be a general code for any body part.
** I think Laura nailed it, I didn't catch that this article was CV only. Will confirm renaming this dx code to be system specific and get back. Ttenbergen 10:41, 2014 September 10 (CDT)
***I think it would be helpful to drop the word 'debridement' from the 'skin grafting/debridement' code and then have a category 'debridement - other' becuase what do we do if the debridement is in a region of the body other than the ones specifically listed, i.e.the pancreas, pleura, scrotum, etc.  I think there are too many areas of the body that could be debrided to list all as system specific debridements. Julie, have you had any requests for this data? Do you see reasons to use option 1 or option 2? Ttenbergen 09:10, 2014 September 9 (CDT)
* We are getting requests from the Burn Unit and the diagnoses of the burn patients are provided.  I think since the two procedures are tackling different body parts (one with skin only while the other is the rest), it will be better to have them separate. Keeping for now until resolved... I think the confusion in this all along was that collectors were answering what the procedures are, where I was trying to find out how to determine when to code which diagnosis...trying again above...

* in other words: How to Skin grafting/Debridement and Wound Debridement relate in collection? Ttenbergen 11:34, 2012 November 26 (EST)
** Both are done by Plastics. Skin grafting is done in the OR whereas debridement can be done in the OR or at the bedside.--CMarks 15:17, 2012 November 27 (EST)
***so would the debridement in Skin grafting/Debridement be used only for skin grafting debridement, then?Ttenbergen 22:02, 2012 November 28 (EST)
**** Ususally but not always, a patient can have large deep areas with decubitus ulcers or fascitis that require extensive debridement but not always get skin graft.--FLindell 08:59, 2012 November 30 (EST)
***** So would you use 763.29 wound debridement, or 83700 - Skin grafting/Debridement? My point here is that I am not sure how they are different. Ttenbergen 13:09, 2012 December 3 (EST)
**Skin grafting adds to the wound whereas debridement removes from the wound. They are completely different procedures.--CMarks 13:31, 2012 December 4 (EST)
*** Yes, I understand that grafting and debriding are different, pretty much opposite. What I was wondering is, is 837.00 for debridement related to grafts only, then? And, does it mean that 763.29 should not be used for debridements related to grafts? Ttenbergen 11:18, 2012 December 5 (EST)
**** in order to clarify, could 837 (skin grafting/debridement) just have the word debridement removed from title?  All debridement procedures would then be under cardio vascular OR and 837 be exclusive to skin grafting.Jkublick Dec. 12,2012
**** That would be one way to handle it. I think it would depend how we use this data - how does Julie report on it? Ttenbergen 23:32, 2012 December 12 (EST)
****the purpose of this code in first place had to do with burn patients in that wounds due to burns are always debrided so that skin grafting can be done.  The code was for either or because generally both are done for burns in ICU therefore it was lumped into one code.  I like Judy's suggestion that 83700 should be strictly skin grafting and 763-23 is for wound debridement.  How have staff been using this code (837) related to burns only or for other type wounds too?  This would help determine if we can split it cleanly or not.

example use of Wound Debridement
*I use this category to cover abdominal surgery patients that return to the OR for debridement, (often called 2nd look) since they are usually removing dead tissue that the patient was too unstable to have addressed in the earlier OR. I also use it for burns or plastics procedures.--Jpeterson 09:26, 2013 August 26 (CDT)
*There is a code under GI OR for abdominal debridements.  The "wound debridement" code is under CV OR which seems to imply use for CV related procedures only, like sternal debridements after heart surgery for example. --LKolesar 10:05, 2014 September 11 (CDT)
