Rules for Coding Falls in ICD10
- Only code in-hospital falls IF THEY CAUSE AN INJURY, and in that case code the associated mechanism of injury as Mechanism of injury: fall or jump (not necessarily from a height)
- Out-of-hospital falls that are a reason for admission, that caused an injury should be coded the same way.
- For out-of-hospital falls that are a reason for admission that did NOT cause an injury --> code Observation after accident/injury combined with Mechanism of injury: fall or jump (not necessarily from a height).
