The left/right atrial appendage is a pouch-like sac in the muscle wall of the atrium; it fills & empties with blood as the atrium does. In Atrial fibrillation and/or atrial flutter or mitral mitral valve disease it is prone to developing thrombus, so it is often ligated during a cardiac procedure prophylactically.
