Some data collectors are coding Obstructive Sleep Apnea as a comorbid under the main diagnosis-Respiratory: Restrictive Lung Disease. I have not been; and, I am wondering if all medicine and critical care data collectors are using this comorbid for OSA? --[[User: Mlaporte | Marie Laporte]] Dec 17.10.
*I never have.  If it is an issue I generally code it in the admission dx. If it has no bearing on their admission I ignore it.[[User:BDeVlaming|BDeVlaming]] 09:48, 20 December 2010 (CST)
** Any chronic disorder that causes a decrease in the ability to expand the lungs or reduces lung volume I code here..Restrictive lung disease can be divided into 2 categories 1 Interstitial 2 Extra pulmonary restrictive Pickwickian Gullian Barre poliomyletis  myasthenia gravis ,kyphosis, scoliosis fall under 2 restrictive lung disease Interstitial restrictive lung disease are things that have cased damage such as gases fumes poisons drugs.
***We code sleep apnea at HSC in the comorbs as restrictive lung. It appears that this is an inconsistent coding practise amongst the data collection team. Trish could you please answer if we should or shouldn't code sleep apnea as a comorb under restrictive lung? Thanks in advance!
