GI Scopes

According to the gospel of CCI Collection#Related Imaging, Diagnostic and Therapeutic procedures performed at the same time, all diagnostic and therapeutic actions completed during the scope will be coded.

• There are generally four CCI Collections that can occur in a GI Scope:
  • Inspection, Exploration (endoscopic)
  • Biopsy (endoscopic)
  • Excision, Resection (for polyp removal)
  • Control of Bleeding (for treating actively bleeding vessels)

Combine one of the above codes with the deepest area that was reached:

• the deepest that was reached of the following
  • (T) Esophagus/(D) Esophagus
  • (T) Stomach, Pylorus/(D) Stomach or Pylorus
  • (T) Small Intestine/(D) Small Intestine

Exceptions:

• If a repair of a vessel that is not currently bleeding use Occlusion + the occluded vessel
  • For an upper esophageal vessel, code Occlusion + (T) Other Vessels of Head, Neck, Spine, NOS
  • For a lower esophageal vessel, code Occlusion + (T) Thoracic Vessels, NOS
  • For all other GI tract vessel repairs, use Occlusion + (T) Blood Vessels, NOS

• For a capsule endoscopy, code:
  • Inspection, Exploration (non-endoscopic) + (D) Small Intestine
