File linking is considered unsafe by the browser makers and was disabled at that level. Happened sometime in 2010-ish.
The LTC folks have just (April 2 2008) enabled file linking for us. This allows us to refer to files on a file share. Of course, that means the share has to be available to anyone who will be using the wiki.
Using this we would be able to take certain topics that we DO NOT WANT to put online, yet leave them accessible through the wiki. A contact list with real emails and phone numbers comes to mind as an example.
To link to files us the syntax
[[file://<share name>]]
e.g. [[file://sbghnwfs0102/NSSVOL1/shared/ICU_DATA_COLLECTION/Output]] will become
[file://\\sbghnwfs0102\NSSVOL1\shared\ICU_DATA_COLLECTION\Admin\Data_Request_Forms\STB_Database_Request_Log.xls this] [file:///sbghnwfs0102\NSSVOL1\shared\ICU_DATA_COLLECTION\Admin\Data_Request_Forms\STB_Database_Request_Log.xls this]
