**Part of the reason this is confusing is that sometimes clinicians use "Chronic bronchitis" and "COPD" interchangeably if the patient is the so-called "blue bloater" phenotype of COPD.

**So, if your patient just has the chronic bronchitis form of COPD (with or without exacerbation) use COPD, without exacerbation or COPD, acute exacerbation.
**use COPD, without exacerbation or COPD, acute exacerbation if a diagnosis is chronic bronchitis and there is a  PRESENCE of COPD.
**On the other hand, use Bronchitis, chronic, infectious or noninfectious if they have it in the ABSENCE of COPD.
**use Bronchitis, chronic, infectious or noninfectious if there is an ABSENCE of COPD.

*J44.8 why would we include this code for a Dx of emphysema when there is already a very specific code and show below J43.9?  also, why would Bronchitis need this code also, as we already have it mapped to 3 other options in IDC10? I do not see how collectors will be able to be consistent with all these double coding options.

****thank you for the response.  The issue will still be if clinicians are not clear on a chart as you pointed out,  then collectors will not be able to acertain what is correct. }}
