Rules for Coding Falls in ICD10

• Only code in-hospital falls IF THEY CAUSE AN INJURY, and in that case code the PRIMARY code is the injury, with the associated mechanism of injury being Mechanism of injury: fall or jump (not necessarily from a height)
• Out-of-hospital falls that are a reason for admission, that caused an injury should be coded the same way.
• For out-of-hospital falls that are a reason for admission that did NOT cause an injury code Observation after accident/injury combined with Mechanism of injury: fall or jump (not necessarily from a height).

• Observation after accident/injury
• Mechanism of injury: fall or jump (not necessarily from a height)
• Ataxia (lack of coordination)
• Disorientation
• Dizziness
• Syncope
