NOTE: A lung biopsy is a procedure that involves obtaining a tissue specimen from the lungs for microscopic analysis to establish a precise diagnosis.

There are three types of lung biopsies:

1. An open lung biopsy is performed via a surgical incision in the chest. When they open the lung area, they use a scope to examine the lung which is a thoroscopy.
   • We do track open lung biopsy specifically.
2. A needle lung biopsy, or percutaneous lung biopsy, is performed by passing a biopsy needle through the skin into the lung. May or may not require fluroscopic or CT guidance. ****so we dont code EBUS
   • we do not track these. Please do not code them as 777-90 Other Pulmonary/Thoracic OR.
3. A bronchoscopic lung biopsy is performed using a bronchoscope, and may or may not require fluoroscopic or CT guidance.
   • see Bronchoscopy/Laryngoscopy. We track the scope however, we do not track if a biopsy was taken during the scope. Please do not code 777-90 Other Pulmonary/Thoracic OR along with the Bronchoscopy.

We are not tracking if a biopsy was taken during a bronchscopy. If anyone wants to know down to that level of detail, then we advise them they will have to audit bronch cases to drill down further on their own.Trish Ostryzniuk 18:08, 2014 April 23 (CDT)

• • • 5/8/2007 Dr Gray stated ignore the method of entry thoracotomy /thoracoscopy and call them all open lung biopsy plus or minus pleurodesis so do we still code pleurodesis under open lung biopsy?
      • no. Pleurodesis is a specific procedure to artificially obliterate the pleural space. A biopsy is the act of taking a sample of tissue for testing. --Trish Ostryzniuk 17:15, 2015 July 7 (CDT)*** how should we code pleurodesis?
