This topic is one that I have mentioned to you twice in the past 6 months re: patients that are admitted to ICU for drug desensitization eg. plavix and ASA as they were unable to have drug eluding stents unless they could be placed on these meds.In all three cases the pts. were approved by ICU attending and admitted for the time required to be desensitized and then returned to the ward. They were admitted to ICU so that they could be monitored and watched closely and were usually less than 6 hours.```Jan Kothuber

*yes Jan, it is on the list.  Are these cases actually admitted under an ICU attending, or is he just giving approval to use the bed and another physician service looked after the patient while in the ICU.

The definition of an "ICU patient" for the Regional ICU Database is:

    • admitted under and ICU service attending physician to an ICU/CCU bed. If patient doesn't meet this definition then we don't collect data and enter into the ICU database.
    • there are circumstances where other services "borrow" an ICU bed for procedures or monitoring, such as medicine for central line insertions, post angio monitoring because angio suit has no staff. Though these patients are looked after by ICU nurses, they are not admitting under an ICU service attending physician. LOS is generally 2-4hrs then they go back to there original department bed.
