Diabetic hyperosmolar conditions

• We have the following codes that can be used to code various diabetic hyperosmolar conditions:
  • Diabetes mellitus acute complication: Non-ketotic hyperosmolar state
  • Diabetes mellitus, in poor control
  • Hyperglycemia -- this is an abnormal test result code, not a disorder. Typically for persistent hyperglycemia in a diabetic you'd use Diabetes mellitus, in poor control instead
  • Diabetic coma -- this code covers any type of coma due to diabetes: hypoglycemic coma, hyperglycemic coma, or coma in Diabetes mellitus acute complication: Non-ketotic hyperosmolar state
• They can be used in combination as appropriate -- e.g. to distinguish the cause of hyperosmotic diabetic coma, you can combine Diabetic coma with:
  • Diabetes mellitus acute complication: Non-ketotic hyperosmolar state -- for non-ketotic hyperosmolar coma
  • Diabetes mellitus, in poor control -- for hyperglycemic/hyperosmotic coma NOT due to non-ketotic hyperosmolar state
