ICU Var 5 - Overflow
ICU Var 5 is used to tag those patients that "overflow" onto other ICU units while under the care of a specific ICU service.
- Because some patients "overflow" to more than one unit during their ICU stay, ICU Var 3 is also used for this purpose.
- Used at HSC and STB
- this tag was introduced in the early 1990's as requested by Dr. Perry Gray.
- he used this information to monitor bed numbers for a specific ICU service and also review the frequency of patient movement to accommodate increased volume for that service.
- for EXAMPLES of how to code see: Overflow to other units - Critical Care HSC and STB only
Possible Values:
- CM = cardiac patient into MICU – under ccu service care.
- SM = surgical patient into MICU – under micu service care.
- MV = MICU pt overflow into CICU - under micu service care.
- SV = SICU pt overflow into CICU — under sicu service care.
- MS = medical patient into SICU – under micu service care.
- CS = cardiac patient into SICU – under ccu service care.
