A CAP is not allowed in acquired/complications. While in hospital a patient can acquire a VAP if ventilated or a HAP but not CAP. Rule added in version ver 2012-04-12.

Discussion

  • A long time ago at one of our team meetings I asked Dr.Roberts how to code the organisms for aspiration pneumonia patients because we normally put aspiration in the organism subcode on admission. He said that when the organism came back a few days later to code it in the complication section as pneumonia with the organism subcode that subsequently grew following the aspiration. Aspirations can occur in the community and in the hospital so the pneumonia may be a CAP or HAP. In the case of a CAP aspiration pneumonia, if an organism grows a few days later I put CAP and then the organism in the complication section as directed by Dr. Roberts. This needs to be clarified if you are not going to allow a CAP in the complication section.--LKolesar 09:12, 2012 April 13 (CDT)
  • That is not correct. CAPS don't occur after admission. If aspirated in community and CAP develops then it is part of admission DX otherwise it is HAP. Makes no sense to have CAPS occurring after admission.Trish Ostryzniuk 13:10, 2012 April 13 (CDT)
