The diagnosis Palliative care should be coded for patients where all of the following are true:

care is given to a person with progressive, advanced underlying chronic disease with little or no prospect of cure
death is apparent however is not immediately imminent
the primary goal is to maintain quality of life.

Treatment is directed towards relieving suffering by managing underlying disease related symptoms.

A patient’s whose death is immediately imminent should be not coded as Palliative care.
