Removing legacy pages from circulation

When information is no longer of day-to-day interest we may still keep it on the wiki. Some of it is required to make sense of our older data, and for some we just don't make a decision to delete it. The only problem with this is that these legacy pages show up in wiki searches; while it is easy to see that a page is legacy once you open it, it can be frustrating to open it only to find it irrelevant.

Possible solution

We could set up a custom namespace "Legacy" which would not be searched by default, and then move most items in Category:Legacy Data into that namespace. By setting the default namespaces searched to exclude this new namespace, the pages would no longer accidentally show up in searches; however the legacy namespace can be included manually and the preference can be saved (e.g. may Julie or all of main office would want to keep searching all, but collectors and externals would omit legacy).

If we did this, some automation could help us with this:

possible problems

This would be a fairly large change, and it's hard to say if any cargo or SMW queries would also break and not be found for a long time. I think this could easily take a full day for the initial changes, and a several days of intermittent troubleshooting. So, we should only do it if it is actually a problem.
