**a VAD is a procedure therefore not a underlying disease, so can't use this code as comorbid condition.  What ever the underlying disease condition is that requires the VAD is what should be in comorbid, example: cardiomyopathy.  You are correct, cardiovascular other is not really a useful code because it means really nothing specific.  If the code VAD insertion as part of the admitting DX (not admit 1) then it could be coded there.  Yes it is not an insertion in ICU but it was inserted prior to coming to ICU from where ever patient came from. Not sure if there is integrity rule that will block this (not from OR but procedure code)  Try it, let me know.[[User:TOstryzniuk|Trish Ostryzniuk]] 18:06, 2012 April 24 (CDT)

Indwelling VADs?

  • I have had 4 or 5 patients come back to the Cardiovascular ICU with indwelling VADS. There is no code for this, only insertion of a VAD. I have used cardiovascular other which does not mean much. Can we get this code added to both the comorbid and the coding sections. Lois
    • a VAD is a procedure therefore not a underlying disease, so can't use this code as comorbid condition.
