The older name Pneumocystis carinii,which now only applies to the Pneumocystis species that is found in rats, is still in common usage. As a result, Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is also known as Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia and (incorrectly) as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.
