NOTE: A lung biopsy is a procedure that involves obtaining a tissue specimen from the lungs for microscopic analysis to establish a precise diagnosis.
There are three types of lung biopsies:
- An open lung biopsy is performed via a surgical incision in the chest.
- We track this specific procedure as indicated in this article.
- A needle lung biopsy, or percutaneous lung biopsy, is performed by passing a biopsy needle through the skin into the lung. May or may not require fluroscopic or CT guidance.
- we do not track these.
- A bronchoscopic lung biopsy is performed using a bronchoscope, and may or may not require fluoroscopic or CT guidance.
- see Bronchoscopy/Laryngoscopy. We track the scope however, we do not track if a biopsy was taken during the scope.
