If the ischemic stroke is embolic (including cardioembolic) then instead of this code, use Cerebral infarction/stroke due to embolism.
If this code occurs, and then the initially ischemic stroke spontaneously "transforms" and bleeds, then COMBINE this code with the appropriate code for the hemorrhage (see below)
- However, if hemorrhage after an ischemic stroke was NOT spontaneous, but followed anticoagulation, then the hemorrhage should be coded as Hemorrhage, due to anticoagulant drugs since it's not a spontaneous hemorrhagic transformation, and thus is a complication of treatment, not a complication of the stroke per se.
