ICU Var 3 was used to tag those patients that "overflow" onto other ICU units while under the care of a specific ICU service.

  • Because some patients "overflow" to more than one unit during their ICU stay, ICU Var 5 - Overflow is also used for this purpose.
  • Used at HSC and STB
  • this tag was introduced in the early 1990's as requested by Dr. Perry Gray.
  • he used this information to monitor bed numbers for a specific ICU service and also review the frequency of patient movement to accomodate increased volume for that service.
  • for EXAMPLES of how to code see: Overflow to other units - Critical Care HSC and STB only

Possible Values:

  • SR = surgical patient into Recovery Room - under sicu service care.
    • 4 scenarios:
    1. Entire stay is in RR under SICU attending care.
    2. Before being transferred to SICU from RR a minimum time under SICU attending care in RR must be 2 hrs. or more to qualify as an overflow.
    3. Patient is transferred out of SICU into RR & is still under SICU care in RR before being transferred to the ward.
    4. Patient is transferred from SICU to RR then back to SICU. Note: This is not a new admission back to SICU but a continuous admission. Patient profile should be tagged as an SR.
  • MR = medical patient into Recovery Room - under micu service care.
  • CR = cardiac patient into Recovery Room – under ccu service care.
  • SU = surgical patient into IICU - under sicu service care.
  • MU = medical patient into IICU - under micu care.
