AG REPLY -- Tina, I think the stuff below is it. But note, as I indicated in an email I just sent you (8/28/2018) I think we should change ALL the mechanism codes from "Mechanism of injury" to "Mechanism of accident or injury". That change would make these code names very long; how important is this change?

Rules for Coding Falls in ICD10

Only code in-hospital falls IF THEY CAUSE AN INJURY, and in that case code the PRIMARY code is the injury, with the associated mechanism of injury being Mechanism of injury: fall or jump (not necessarily from a height)
Out-of-hospital falls that are a reason for admission, that caused an injury should be coded the same way.
For out-of-hospital falls that are a reason for admission that did NOT cause an injury code Observation after accident/injury combined with Mechanism of injury: fall or jump (not necessarily from a height).
