Additional Info

  • Organ donors can be dead or alive.
    • Donation after death can be either:
      • After brain death: Brain death
      • Donation after cardiac death (DCD) -- where a donor who is not brain dead is dependent on life support and the family has decided to withdraw care. When the patient's heart stops beating, the organs are then recovered in the operating room.
      • Donation after Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) -- where a person who undergoes MAID has made arrangements in advance for organ harvesting after death.
  • We only want to code this for major organ donations, i.e. not cornea, skin or bones.

Alternate ICD10s to consider coding instead or in addition

Will this end up coded as Transplant or is that for receiving a transplant only? Would it then be coded as Procure, Harvest, Obtain for Further Use? And with which CCI component 1 codes - what organ was something done to, ie do all removed organs need to be coded separately? Will we want a CCMDB Data Integrity Checks for that?

  • Do we want to differentiate between living and cadaver donor renal transplants like we did with the old system?
