Causes:

  • 20-60% - results from pneumonia
  • Thoracic trauma (in about 1-5% of cases)
  • Rupture of a lung abscess into the pleural space
  • Extension of a non–pleural-based infection (eg, mediastinitis, abdominal infection)
  • Esophageal tear
  • Iatrogenic introduction at the time of thoracic surgery
  • An indwelling catheter that is a nidus (breeding place) for infection

Template:Discussion What does it mean to code a post-op empyema? Does it mean the empyema occured post-op? Or does it mean the empyema was present pre-op and treated with an operative procedure? If anyone knows the answer can they please post the answer here and delete the discussion. Thanks!
