- This entity is a subset of obstructive sleep apnea, in which in addition to having apnea with hypercapnic episodes during sleep, these people also have hypercapnia while awake. As a result, these chronically hypercapnic patients generally have compensatory metabolic alkalosis (i.e. high serum bicarbonate to counteract the effect of the high pCO2 on blood pH).
- The diagnosis is generally made based on: demonstrated sleep apnea, obesity, and daytime hypercapnia not explained by other disorders (e.g. severe COPD).
- It's also called Pickwick Syndrome.
