Additional Info

  • This is a wastebasket code for bone discontinuity problems that are not coded anywhere else. They include:
    • Malunion or nonunion of a bone -- these refer to problems with a bone failing to repair itself some time after a fracture (of any cause) occurred. Thus, the fracture is no longer current, but the bone never knitted, or knitted poorly/incorrectly. For these cases, we do not have any coding for the specific bone that failed to knit properly.
    • A nontraumatic fracture NOT due to one of the causes shown immediately below. In this case, this is a "go with" code that should be combined with the ICD10 code for the specific bone fractured. For these cases, you should also code the bone fractured.
