, with the associated mechanism of injury being '''[[Mechanism of injury: fall or jump (not necessarily from a height)]]'''
With the exception from '''[[Observation after accident/injury]]''' if it is used to code the observational care itself, not the suspected injury. So, in regard to a fall in hospital without an injury, use this code only if there was actual additional medical observation that resulted from the fall, e.g. an extra day in hospital.

*Out-of-hospital falls that are a reason for admission, that caused an injury should be coded the same way.
*Out-of-hospital falls that are a reason for admission, that caused an injury should be coded the same way.
*For out-of-hospital falls that are a reason for admission that did '''NOT''' cause an injury code '''[[Observation after accident/injury]]''' combined with '''[[Mechanism of injury: fall or jump (not necessarily from a height)]]'''.
*For out-of-hospital falls that are a reason for admission that did '''NOT''' cause an injury --> code '''[[Observation after accident/injury]]''' combined with '''[[Mechanism of injury: fall or jump (not necessarily from a height)]]'''.

Rules for Coding Falls in ICD10

  • This code is used if a person was observed for a suspected accident/injury/trauma but did NOT end up having an injury (e.g. patient fell, hit his head, initial workup was negative but he was admitted and observed for a day, during which no evidence of an actual injury occurred.
  • Along with this, you should also code the Mechanism of the accident, using one of the codes in Category:Mechanism.
  • If an actual injury occurred, coded that (or those), not his entity.
  • It is used to code the observational care itself, not the suspected injury. So, in regard to a fall in hospital without an injury, use this code only if there was actual additional medical observation that resulted from the fall, e.g. an extra day in hospital.
