Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious upper respiratory infection (URTI) caused by flu viruses.
Pre ICD10 instructions
Coding Instructions
- we don't have a code for "flu".
- code as: Tracheobronchitis with pathogen subcode - Influenza virus
- must be have positive culture nasal swab culture. If negative nasal swab, then must be confirmed with Cadham lab result before coded as influenza related.
CAP?
Do not code as a CAP due to an Influenza virus unless there is supporting evidence such CXR changes AND a positive culture from Cadham Lab.
Disseminated Infection
A Disseminated Infection due to a flu virus is extremely rare. If there are other organs that are suspected to be infected with influenza (ie. viral Myocarditis., etc) plus you have a positive influenza swab then you can use Disseminated Infection as the diagnostic code with Influenza virus as the pathogen. (This directive was given by Dr. Kumar).
Septic Shock
If patient has Septic Shock or Severe Sepsis code results of blood culture sent if one has been sent.
- Code tracheobronchitis if nasal swab is positive for Influenza virus. If negative nasal swab, then must be confirmed with Cadham lab result before coded as influenza related.
Background Info

- our code does not distinguish whether infection is nosocomial or not
Legacy information
This code replaces 3005 - Bronchitis as of 2013 May 31. See Bronchitis#Legacy Information for more info.
