NOTE:Code 15700 Hypertension is only avaible as a COMORBID DIAGNOSIS code.
Since we have a number of codes for BP problems, the following has been decided for the coding of BP problems in unit.
If a patient is having hypertensive blood pressure problems in unit, you can not use the code 157-00 Hypertension, as it is only allowed as a comorbid diagnosis.
To code an Admit Diagnosis or Acquired Diagnosis / Complication use code 199-19 Uncontrolled Hypertension. This code can be used if a patient has an underlying condition of HTN (comorbid) or if you are not sure why he is having hypertensive BP problems, but the problem is significant and is being treated.
Do not code hypertension if it is due to Inotropes.
Use the following for patients who patients only with any type of significant BP problems unrelated to septic, cardiogenic or Hypovolemic Shock. Do not use any of the BP codes listed for shock patients as BP problems will be present by definition.
- 19908 - Hypotension NYD (not due to shock or post op)
- 19919 - Uncontrolled Hypertension
- 89800 - BP Control-Post Op (this is for either post op hypotension or hypertension).
